Jobbing Clerk Sentenced To 12 Months After Found Guilty

Thursday, April 29, 2010, one Jobbing Clerk, Awg Mohd Murad bin Hj Arip was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court Bandar Seri Begawan after he was found guilty of 2 counts of charges under Section 420 of the Penal Code (Chapter 22) and 2 counts of charges under Section 420 of the Penal Code (Chapter) read together with section 511 of the same.

Deputy Public Prosecutor, Dk Norsuzanawati bte Pg Abas informed the Court that investigation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau revealed that the defendant cheated the victims by falsely representing to them that he was in a position to delete their names from a list of government employees to be dismissed from their posts. The defendant had thereby dishonestly induced the 1st victim to deliver the sum of B$2,000 (Two Thousand Dollars) to him and a sum of B$250 (Two Hundred Dollars) from the 2nd victim.

The defendant was also found guilty for attempting to cheat the victims by falsely representing that he was in a position to delete their names form a list of government employees to be dismissed from their posts for a payment in the sum of B$2,000 (Two Thousand Dollars) for each victim, when he had full knowledge that such list did not exist and thereby attempted to dishonestly induce the victims to deliver the said sum.

The defendant was sentenced to 4 months imprisonment for each of 1st and 2nd charges, and 2 months imprisonment for each of 3rd and 4th charges.
